The Solberg brothers brought skiing to Flagstaff in 1915, using homemade skis on Sheep Hill. In the 1930s, Arizona State Teachers College (now NAU) started its Winter Sports Carnival and a ski club, which developed runs on the San Francisco Peaks.
Arizona Snowbowl, one of the oldest continually operating ski areas in the country, emerged from this early skiing activity. The US Forest Service permitted the construction of a road and ski lodge on the western slopes of the Peaks, marking the formal beginning of Snowbowl.
Rooted in Flagstaff since 1967, the Flagstaff Ski Club was born from a community passion for the mountains and a belief that Arizona's young athletes deserved a home in competitive alpine sports. Nearly 60 years later, that founding spirit lives on in every athlete who trains on the slopes of Arizona Snowbowl.
The team, now with over 180 athletes, trains at the Arizona Snowbowl and competes in the US Ski & Snowboard events. They focus on developing skills, sportsmanship, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
The Flagstaff Ski & Snowboard Team continues to be a significant part of the Flagstaff winter sports community, offering a structured program for junior athletes and fostering a strong sense of family and community.
